Colossians 3:12b

Colossians 3:12b
Therefore put on – as chosen ones both holy and having been loved – deep compassion in mercy, kindness, humbleness, gentleness, patience …

Thoughts for Today

First Thought:

In this passage, we get three nice perspectives in what the life of a follower of God looks like.  The first of these perspectives is mercy.  We are to be merciful.  We are to be kind.  This makes sense.  If we are following God, we should look like Him.  What does God look like to us?  God was merciful to us.  When we needed grace, He provided.  When we deserved condemnation, He saved us.  He is a God of mercy and compassion.  As His followers, we should be the same.

Where in your life are you compassionate?  Where in your life are you prone to showing mercy?

Second Thought:

The second perspective is humbleness.  We are not to be focused on ourselves.  We are not to think more of ourselves than is reasonable.  We need to be willing to put the priorities of God ahead of our own.  We need to live a life that is rooted in God first.  After all, isn’t this the model we see in Jesus?  God asked Jesus to take on human form and He did.  God asked Jesus to take on the human form of a fairly unimportant man, too.  God asked Jesus to make disciples out of other fairly unimportant people.  God then asked Jesus to die for our sake even when He didn’t deserve to die.  Jesus did all of those things because He was humble.

Where are you humble?  When in your life are you not willing to be humble?

Third Thought:

The last perspective that we have is a perspective of gentleness and peace.  I find this to be such a great place to talk about God.  When human beings think about what we would do if we were omnipotent, we typically don’t think about being gentle and peaceful.  We would be dominant.  We would get our way.  We would flaunt our omnipotence.  Yet this is not what we see in God.  God is gentle with us.  He desires peace with us rather than the judgment and condemnation that we deserve.

Where are you gentle and seeking peace?  How do you see God as being a God of peace and gentleness?
