2 John 4-6

2 John 4-6
I was being made exceedingly glad because I have found some out of your children while behaving in truth – just as we received a commandment from the Father.  And now I ask you, lady – not as while writing a new commandment to you but as we were having from the beginning – in order that we should love one another.  And this is love: in order that we should behave according to His commandments.  This is the commandment, just as you all heard from the beginning, in order that you all should behave in this.

Thoughts for Today

First Thought:

John rejoices in that some of the people associated with the chosen lady are behaving – living – in the truth.  Here is a basic reality in Christianity.  When people are growing closer to God, we should rejoice.  We should be made exceedingly glad when people are growing closer to the Lord!

Are you brought to joy when you see people living in obedience to God?  Is there anything that ever get between you and your joy?

Second Thought:

The joy is based on obedience, though!  Notice how John defines behaving in the truth.  John speaks in terms of commandment.  We live in God’s truth when we are obedient to His ways – His commandments.  When we see people living in obedience to God, it is time to celebrate and be made exceedingly glad!

When you think of human beings and relationship with God, how high on your list is obedience?  How do you know obedience to God when you see it?

Third Thought:

John then clarifies what obedience looks like.  Obedience to God looks like loving one another.  Now we see the initial point tie into the ending point.  If we see people who are being obedient to God, then we should have little difficulty being made glad.  If we are made glad by their obedience, then we should have little difficulty loving them.  So where does our love originate from?  It originates from having the right perspective.  It originates from knowing for what we should be looking.  When our perspective is right and we are looking for obedience to God and not the fulfillment of our own desires, it is easy for us to love those who are drawing closer to God.

Do you look to love others based on their obedience to God?  What other areas do you base your love for other people upon?
