Matthew 6:19-21

Matthew 6:19-21
Do not keep safe for yourselves a secure treasure upon the earth, where moth and corrosion bring to utter ruin and where thieves break in and steal.  But keep safe for yourselves a secure treasure in heaven, where neither moth nor corrosion bring to utter ruin and where thieves neither break in nor steal.  For where your secure treasure is, there your heart is also.

Thoughts for Today

First Thought:

Now Jesus tells us to not store up treasure on this earth.  In other words, there is nothing on this earth worth our ultimate pursuit.  Nothing on this earth is forever.  Nothing on this earth will avoid the effects of time.  Nothing on this earth will satisfy completely forever.  As the Christian Band DC Talk sings, “Things of this world are passing away.  Here tomorrow but they’re sure not here to stay.”

What are you pursuing in this world?  Is it worth it?  What catches your eye in this world?

Second Thought:

Jesus then advises us to have our treasure in heaven.  Here’s the thing.  Treasure in heaven is in the dominion of God.  Who can pluck what is in God’s hand away from Him?  Who can make void that which the very presence of God guarantees?  What can corrode that which the very presence of God sustains?

Is your treasure with God?  What do you think treasure with God actually is?  How do you keep this treasure safe?

Third Thought:

Jesus lays down a huge amount of truth in this passage.  “Where your treasure is, there your heart is also.”  Notice what he doesn’t say.  He doesn’t say, “Where your heart is will be where your treasure is.”  He gives us the reverse of this.  Our heart follows our treasure, not the other way around.  So what does this mean for us?  It means we are all for sale.  It means we all have a price.  It means that every single one of us will follow worth.  The question that Jesus poses for each of us is what is the worth that we will follow?  What is that which catches our eye and tugs at our heart?

So what tugs at your heart?  What is your life devoted to attaining?  Is your treasure worth your pursuit?  What treasure is worth your pursuit?
